Event

We are glad to release the outline of the 39th (2025) Shirakawa-go Light-up Event, a winter tradition at the Shirakawa-go World Heritage Site.
This event will be held on a "complete advance reservation only" basis. A admission ticket system will be introduced for this year's event, and the eligibility will be checked at the entrance of the village during the event period.

The event will be held under the number control by complete advance reservation and admission ticket system. 
Please be sure to make the reservation in advance and purchase the event admission ticket. Without the ticket, you will be asked to leave. 
Tickets will not be sold on the day of the event.
・Please note that the admission ticket allows you to walk around the illuminated village, but does not allow you to go up to the observation deck. Admission tickets are valid only for that day and are color-coded according to the day.
Please note that there will be two types of tickets: with and without access to the Observation Deck. Not all participants will be able to go up to the observation deck. Please refer to 「3. About the Observation Deck Ticket」 for details.
Please note that flying drone is strictly prohibited in the World Heritage Village as it is a also a residential area.

There will be a limited number of four times light-up events this year. Please check the schedule below.
We ask for your understanding and cooperation in holding this year's event four times as a result of the lack of snow due to global warming and the time of sunset.
The Light-up event area will be in the Ogimachi district of Shirakawa-go Village.

*Only January 13 will be held on a Monday (holiday) due to a three-day weekend.

On the days of light-up events, restrictions will be placed on daytime sightseeing in order to separate event participants from non-event participants. Please read the following contents.

Parking lot usage

No reservations are required for daytime sightseeing.
Designated parking lots open at 8:00, last entry at 15:00, and close at 17:00.
The last entry for daytime sightseeing vehicles (including tour buses) will be at 15:00.
The estimated time required for the World Heritage village tour is approximately 2 to 3 hours. We strongly recommend the daytime sightseeing tourist to arrive to the parking lot by 12:00 p.m. to allow enough time for sightseeing.

About the observation deck

Cars are not allowed on the Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck(the part operated by the village). Please use the observatory shuttle bus or walk to the observation deck.
The Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck will be closed at 16:10 due to preparations for the lighting-up event. 
Shuttle buses to the observation deck will be in regular operation (9:00-15:40 for uphill, 9:10-16:10 for downhill).
The observation deck can be reached on foot in 15-20 minutes from the walking path behind the Wada House.

Only those who have the Observation Deck Ticket will be able to enjoy the light-up event from the Observation Deck.
Observation Deck tickets are limited and will not be sold separately. Please note that if you do not have an Observation Deck Ticket, you will not be able to go up to the Observation Deck.
There are only two ways to obtain an Observation Deck ticket as following:
(1) Stay overnight at Shirakawa-go Village on the day of the event with the "Observation Deck Ticket Included Plan".
(2) Participate in the "Light-up Event Tour with Observation Deck Ticket" offered by hightway bus companies (Nobi Bus, Kaetsunou Bus, Hokutetsu bus, and Toyama Chitetsu Bus).

※The number of tickets is limited for both (1) and (2). Tourist other than those listed above will not be allowed to go to the observation deck. Please note that our staff will check the tickets during the event.

Notes on the Observation Deck

The use of camera tripods is strictly prohibited on the Observation Deck.
To reduce crowding, the observation deck tour will be divided into three groups. Please follow the instructions of the staff on the day. Please visit the Observation deck at the scheduled times on your tickets.
After checking your ticket at the observatory gate, you will be guided to walk to the observation deck. (Please note the exceptions below).
A specail shuttle bus will be provided for visitors with special needs, such as the physically disabled, handicapped, and expectant mothers. Reservations are required, so please contact the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association.
Please note that due to heavy snowfall, you may not be able to access the observation deck for safety reasons.
Observation deck tickets may not be resold or transferred.

The Shirakawa-go Light-up Event will be held under a complete advance reservation and admission ticket system. Participants will be given a "neck holder" to clearly identify them as participants.
In addition, tickets will be color-coded by day and will only be valid for that day.
To attend, you must choose one of the five options below and make a reservation in advance.
All participants who have made reservations will receive an admission ticket on the day of the event. The location where the admission ticket is handed out is different for each.

Reserve a Light-up event designated parking space (Observation deck ticket not included).
Reserve a Light-up event designated parking space, and coming by taxi (Observation deck ticket not included).

The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association can sell only ①, ②, and ③. If you prefer to participate the Light-up event by ④ or ⑤, please contact directly the hightway bus company or the travel agent.

①Lodging in the village on the day of the event (with observatory ticket)

In order to ensure fairness, reservations for lodging for the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association's light-up event will not be made on a first-come, first-served basis, but by lottery.
The Light-up event reservation schedule is as follows.

The detailed content of the accommodation and how to apply for the lottery will be available from 13:00 on 1 October (Tuesday), so please be patient.

※Only winners will be notified by e-mail. Please make your reservation and credit card payment with the URL for winners which we will send you by e-mail on the 10th November.

②Reserve a parking lot designated for the Light-up event for the standard-sized car (observation deck ticket not included).

Please reserve a Light-up Event designated parking space for the standard-sized car in advance. Parking reservations are for standard size vehicles only.
Please note that vehicles, such as buses, camping car or larger than a microbus(microsbus included), are not permitted in the parking lot.
Reservations for Light-up event parking will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations will be stopped when the maximum number of vehicles is reached.

Please note that the fee per car will be changed according to the number of visitors.
The parking lot for the illumination will be the Midajima Parking Lot. (Please note that the previous parking lot was the Terao Parking Lot, which will be changed this year.)

Reservations can only be made online through the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association website.

No changes or cancellations will be allowed after reservations have been made. (Non-refundable)
Parking reservations do not allow access to the observation deck.
※You may be required to present identification such as a driver's license.
※After making a reservation, a parking permit will be sent to you by e-mail from the end of December to the beginning of January.
※The entrance ticket will be given together with the map at the reception desk on the day of the tour.
※Please note the following
   If you apply for a group of 1-5 persons and there are more than 5 persons on the day of the event, an additional fee of 4,000 yen will be charged on the day of the event.
   If you apply for a group of 6-10 people and there are less than 6 people on the day of the event, the difference will not be refunded.
③Reserve a designated parking space for those coming by taxi (observation deck ticket not included)

For visitors coming by taxi, a reservation for the dedicated light-up parking lot is required in the same way as for "② Reserving a designated parking lot for standard-sized vehicle (observation deck ticket not included)" above. Please make the parking lot reservation for your taxi.

There is no taxi pool in the village. Please park as same as other regular viecle.
Once the taxi park,you can not move the car.
An admission ticket will be handed over at the entrance of parking lot.

No passengers are allowed to get on or get off the car on the street.
Maximum number of visitors is 10 including the driver.

Please note that admission tickets will not be sold on the day of the event.

④Participating in a bus tour organized by a highway bus company (the observation deck inluded or not)

Bus tours organized by highway bus company (Nohi Bus, Kaetsunou Bus, Hokutetsu bus, and Toyama Chitetsu Bus).will be available for the light-up event.
Normally, highway bus do not operate at night, but following the announcement of the 2025 Shirakawa-go Light-up event schedule, a special reservation-only tour bus will be available.
※Please note that some tours may or may not include a ticket for the observation deck.
※For reservations, etc., please contact the bus companies directly.
Please note that starting this year, the timing of sales will differ depending on the date of the event, as we want to facilitate bookings by spreading out the booking period.
 The sales timing for each event date will be as follows.

On October 4, reservations can only be made for the January 13 event; if you wish to reserve the January 19 event, please wait until October 11.

The Shirakawa-go Light-up is available by reservation only, even for vehicles larger than a microbus.
Buses without a bus parking permit will not be allowed to participate in the light-up event.
Please note that buses are not allowed to drive up to the observation deck.

<Please note the following>
・Reservations are accepted on the condition that each passenger 「purchases goods or services offered at commercial facilities in Shirakawa Village on the day of the event」.
However, it is currently very difficult to make new bus reservations for light-up only, as each office already has a travel agency with which it deals throughout the year.
 Therefore, please consider using a standard car such as a Hiace (up to 10 people) instead of a bus reservation and make a reservation using ‘(2) Reserve a designated parking space for your own car’.

【Bus Reservation Overview】
・There is a limit to the number of reservations that can be accepted, and the number of reservations accepted will vary depending on each commercial facility.
・The Shirakawa-go Light-up Committee (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association) does not act as an intermediary between travel agencies or bus companies and the commercial facilities that may accept reservations.
・The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association cannot accept reservations for buses because we do not have a designated quota for buses.Please contact the commercial facilities directly to make reservations.
・We also strictly prohibit customers from boarding and disembarking on the street due to violations of the rules.
・If you do not have a bus parking permit, you will not be able to enter the village during the event. Please note that tickets will not be sold on the day of the event.
 

【About participating in the Shirakawa-go Light-up Event】
The Shirakawa-go Light-up Event is a reservation-only event.
   You will not be able to participate even if you arrive on the day of the event. No tickets will be sold on the day of the event.
・Please wear the ticket holder around your neck at all times while entering the gate and walking through the village.
   Please note that those without a ticket will not be allowed to enter and will be asked to leave without one.
・Please note that some visitors may or may not be able to visit the Observation Deck depending on the type of reservation.

【For those arriving by highway bus】
The last buses departing from Shirakawa-go are between 16:00 and 17:00, before the lights are turned on.
Please be sure to check the bus schedule in advance.

【The use of drones is not permitted】
The World Heritage Village is a residential area. Drones are not allowed.
 The same applies to light events. Violations will be prosecuted.

【Winter tires are required】
Please make sure you have studless tires on your car.
 Please be careful not to drive too fast in curves, etc. as the area is covered with heavy snowfall.

【Temperatures and Clothing】
・During the event period, it is cold at night, with temperatures ranging from -10℃ to 0℃, and the road surface is icy.
 We recommend that you wear warm clothes, waterproof winter boots and spikes. Please be sure to bring a flashlight as it is dark underfoot.

【About Hakusan Taxi Company in Shirakawa-go Village】
・Taxi companies in Shirakawa-go Village do not operate on the day of the lighting event.

Parking, getting on and off, etc., in areas other than the designated parking lots is prohibited.
We ask for your understanding and cooperation to ensure the smooth operation of the event. The following penalties have been established for violators.

Permanent ban from participating in Shirakawa-go light-up events, including all group companies.
